The Carmel Pine Cone
Rave for new restrooms
Letter from President of Carmel Residents Association

“Dear Editor,
My first viewing of the new bathrooms at Scenic and Santa Lucia was a very positive experience. The stunningly simple design with its undulating facade and flat sod roof complemented by the curved rock wall received nothing but thumbs up from passerby and those standing in line.

“Worth every cent” said a young man as he carried firewood down to the cove for a beach party with friends.

My compliments to the architect, to the Carmel planning department, to the mayor and city council, and to the planning commissioners and administrative staff for going through such a rigorous process. These people understood the need for a design that would make us all proud that we live in a village that respects good design, even in its public bathrooms.”

“The stylish, still-fresh facility boasts a living roof and solid mahogany doors that feel heavier than most people. Artfully-crafted stone walls camouflage it in the bluff, and architect Rob Carver, its designer, says the final product is “supposed to evoke ruins.””

“About 100 yards north of the Walker House, the only building in Carmel designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, sits a beautiful new restroom that looks like it was designed by the legend himself.”

Dear Rob,

I am delighted to supply a letter of recommendation for the excellent work you have done for us at Carmel Properties. We consider you our primary architect for development as well for any remodeling of the existing buildings.

As you know CPC owns about 25 acres including 3.5 acres of undeveloped land at the mouth of the Carmel River. The property includes 42,000 square feet of offices and 10,000 square feet of free standing bank buildings, two gas stations and the 144 room Carmel Mission Inn.

The empty lot is the only commercially zoned land in the area that has not been developed. We have had multiple offers on the lot and have relied on your firm to review them. Over the last ten years that you have worked with us your advice on this property, and the proposed developments, has been invaluable. The review of the recent Starbucks remodel near the empty lot was also very helpful.

Any potential client of yours should know that your firm is the go to place for getting through the maze of county planning, and that your work is creative, thoughtful and diligent.

We appreciate all you have done, and I would be glad to go into greater detail with anyone who is interested in your commercial and residential work.

Feel free to forward this to any interested party.

Yours Truly,

Charley

Re: Robert Carver/Carver + Schicketanz Architects

To whom it may concern:

Mr. Carver and his firm, Carver + Schicketanz Architects, have worked for me and my clients on several projects over the last 10 years. These projects have included commercial and residential architectural and interior design.

Their local knowledge and innovative approach has proven successful in the often times difficult permitting process.

We are very satisfied with the high level of quality of the design work and execution oversight that Carver + Schicketanz has completed for us.

Carver + Schicketanz produces projects substantially on time and on budget. They are hard-working, honest, reliable and a pleasure to work with.

I would recommend Mr. Carver and his firm, Carver + Schicketanz, without reservation.

Sincerely,

Howard Dickstein
