The Design Concept was to create a site specific “non-building” that blends into an environmentally sensitive site and enhances public access to a popular beach. This goal became a reality through a vegetated roof that rises out of the landscape and the use of local stone that exists throughout the site both naturally and as beach walls. Meticulous attention was paid to the setting of each stone to create a natural ruins that blends with the idyllic setting. The radial plan, suggestive of a nautilus shell, was conceived to preserve the existing cypress trees and integrate harmoniously into the natural topography. The use of stealth principles with no parallel surfaces resulted in a building that disappears into the shadows of the trees that grow through and over it. The public restrooms feature natural ventilation and windows that provide illumination to a modern interior featuring water conserving fixtures. The end result of 10 years of debate and 2 administrations is a restroom that complements the site while serving the needs of relieved beachgoers.
